E3 Conference took place between June 13-15, with around 42 upcoming games showcased. Highlights include Metro Exodus (release date TBC), which continues the narrative from novels Metro 2033 and Metro 2035 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.
I’ve become more receptive to open-world games recently, with State of Decay 2 scheduled for release in Spring 2018.
“How will you survive?” You can’t beat full-blown immersion into a post-apocalyptic utopia where you seek out and construct your own settlement, whilst forced to wade through hoards of the undead.
Assassin’s Creed: Origins – scheduled for release on October 27 – was disappointing and could easily be overlooked, but does well to mimic the artisan charm of an ancient Egyptian city, where the Brotherhood was born.
FAR CRY 5
Release Date: February 27, 2018
“It’s always a pleasure to explore Far Cry’s vast and unlimited landscapes.”
The Far Cry franchise has evolved significantly since it was first released in 2004. It’s a game you have no choice but to take your time with. Far Cry 5 is no exception.
It’s been revamped in a big way. Far Cry 5 is set in modern-day America, Montana to be precise, and takes on a political stance. Patriotism appears to be prominent in Fall’s End, Hope County, which is based on real-life Montana. It’s always a pleasure to explore Far Cry’s vast and unlimited landscapes. It’s so realistic in the trailer above, that you can almost feel the blades of tall grass brushing against your legs as you wade through. I could see myself spending copious amounts of time playing this game.
Far Cry 5 is all about acquiring information, with gamer experiences differing depending on which route you decide to take. There’s an end goal to gameplay. Everything is “for hire” as you stand against a dangerous and aggressive cult called Eden’s Gate. Naturally, mount guns are a regular feature and are highly effective in combat. You have a guns-eye view of events as you assume the role of the leader of the rebellion – meet new people, build your army and plan your attack. You can even explore with a little furry friend, should you choose to do so. www.ubisoft.com/en-gb/game/far-cry-5
ANTHEM – due for release in 2018
“I like the personality that Anthem puts across. It’s serious, but sassy.”
Anthem looks set to be one of the biggest Xbox games scheduled for release next year. A collaborative product from Electronic Arts and BioWare, Anthem is playable on the Xbox One, Xbox One S and new Xbox One X console, and sees players undertake a dangerous expedition either alone or with the help of their own co-operative squad of up to four players.
Note the game’s striking attention to detail in the demonstration above. Observe the deep-cut textures on the gentleman’s face and the positively-stunning scenery that immerses the player into Anthem’s world. Key Objectives guide players through, in which they serve as protectors, known as “Freelancers.” I like the personality that Anthem puts across. It’s serious, but sassy. There’s a slight Fallout vibe, with the inclusion of full body suits – nicknamed “Javelins” (probably due to the way they pierce through the air.) Javelins can be upgraded and customised to give the player “superhuman” abilities. www.ea.com/games/anthem
LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM
Release Date: August 31, 2017 (Episode One)
“Prepare for an explosive and emotionally-charged three-episode prequel to the original Life Is Strange series, which focuses on Chloe’s story three years before the events of the first game.”
Life Is Strange: Before The Storm does what it says on the tin. Prepare for an explosive and emotionally-charged three-episode prequel to the original Life Is Strange series, which focuses on Chloe’s story three years before the events of the first game. Chloe Price tackles the untimely death of her Father, with Before The Storm delving deeper into Chloe’s friendship with reoccurring character Rachel Amber. “I feel numb.” The E3 trailer immerses players into Life Is Strange’s characteristic Indie-punk atmosphere, coupled with shots of Arcadia Bay’s most scenic spots viewed from a crows-eye perspective.
Chloe’s story is certainly deemed more interesting, more believable and more human than Maxine Caulfield and her new-found abilities to rewind time. Chloe’s past had already happened by this point, therefore it wouldn’t make sense to alter or change it. Before The Storm is not a time-travel piece, but stays true to the original by relying on a choice-driven narrative to guide it along.
Square Enix offers more flexibility to gameplay in Before The Storm, with a “Backtalk” feature for Chloe that injects more personality into the game. There will be consequences to Chloe’s actions. I’m looking forward to Before The Storm’s release. Read my review of Life Is Strange here and here. www.lifeisstrange.com

DISHONORED: DEATH OF THE OUTSIDER
Release Date: September 15, 2017
“Drunken Whaler” plays in the background, throwing back to Dishonored’s original trailer shown at E3 in 2012.”
Considering the long-awaited release of Dishonored 2, I’m surprised at the speedy turnaround of the Death Of The Outsider, which is a stand-alone extension to the Bethesda Softworks franchise.
The trailer is eerie, dark and a tad nostalgic and focuses on female protagonist Meagan Foster from Dishonored 2, who appears to have upgraded to become part-cyborg. It hints that she’s a WANTED assassin as the poster shows (0:50) and we would assume that she’s the new Dishonored. She’s on a rescue mission to retrieve Daud – her former mentor – who first appeared in Dishonored as the Leader of the Whalers. “Drunken Whaler” plays in the background, throwing back to Dishonored’s original trailer shown at E3 in 2012. Developed by Arkane Studios, gameplay could mimic it’s predecessor, whereby it is rumoured that people can choose to play as either Foster or Daud. The narrative is choice-driven, naturally.
It was through the original Dishonored that we were introduced to the Outsider. Admittedly, I have yet to play Dishonored 2, but (without spoiling too much) it’s where you come to learn more about the Outsider’s character, which is voiced by Robin Lord Taylor.
